About the Area
Benissa is a town in the Marina Alta district and has about 14,000 inhabitants. Benissa is one of the oldest cities on the Costa Blanca with beautifully preserved buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. which are adorned with heraldic shields and have balconies with wrought-iron grilles.
The name Benissa itself is Arabic and means the son of Isa, who was probably a significant Arab tribe that populated this area during the Arab era.
The city is a little further inland but also has a 4 km long coastal strip, mostly with small bays and cliffs. Benissa is also surrounded by high mountains. The city has been shaped into what it is today through years of Iberian, Roman, Arabic and Christian history.
The water is crystal clear and is a paradise for anyone who wants to snorkel. Other water sports that are practiced here are diving, sailing, kayaking and windsurfing.
There are several nice beaches of different nature and the largest are La Fustera, Baladrar, Cala Pinet and Cala Llobella.
The landscape is magnificent with high rocky mountains so by natural soul hiking is another popular activity and the most famous mountain is the Sierra de Bernia which is almost 1200 meters above sea level. There are many hiking trails of varying difficulty.
The view from Benissa is magical with wonderful views of the Penon de Ifach, also called the Calpe Rock.
