About Istán

About the Area

Istán is a small village located about 15 km northwest of Marbella. The village is located on the southern slope of the Sierra de las Nieves mountain range.

Istán is a true hiker's paradise. From here you can do everything from long hikes that take the whole day or just stroll around the village for a while. But whatever you choose, nature plays a big role.

Here the water springs up from the underground and forms streams and rivers, the water of which is led around among the plantations in small canals from the time of the Moors. In the valley below the Sierra Blanca there is a microclimate with almost tropical vegetation. Here it is pleasant to wander along the water channels past the small barriers and up to the source of the Rio Molino, the source of the rich vegetation. Inside the village itself there is also water flowing. Small fountains line the streets here and there and provide fresh water directly from the rock, which is composed of a porous limestone.

Like a sponge, it absorbs and filters the water that finds its way down to the sea. Today, it is slowed down by the Concepción Dam, built in 1992 and providing drinking water to coastal towns.

It takes about 60 minutes by car to Malaga airport.
