Torremolinos began as a fishing village and then became one of Spain's first tourist destinations.
The Torre de los Molinos, the tower of the windmills, was here as early as 1748. At that time there were fourteen windmills around the village that were kept going by three streams that flowed into the sea at Bajondillo beach.
People go to Torremolinos to sunbathe and swim and maybe not to look at the architecture. The beaches are wide with a seven kilometer long promenade. The beach located in the center is called El Bajondillo.
Torremolinos has built up a hotel business to accommodate a large number of visitors and there is an abundant selection of bars and restaurants.
The first Spanish gay bar, Tony's bar opened in Torremolinos in 1962, since then it has been a frequent destination for gays.
Here it is full in the summers and it seethes with life. The sunbeds are quickly booked up and there are plenty of bars and various water activities to choose from.
Torremolinos has about 70,000 inhabitants.
It takes about 10 minutes by car to Malaga airport.
