The most famous resort town south of Alicante is Torrevieja, which has been transformed from an old fishing village into a modern medium-sized town in the last few decades. With more than 100,000 inhabitants, Torrevieja has doubled its population over the past 30 years. In addition to fine sandy beaches, bays and beautiful beach walks, there is a large selection of shops, restaurants and bars as well as a rich nightlife.
Torreviejas' center is contemporary and modern. It is located in front of the beach and the marina of the city. The Plaza de la Constitución is the main axis of the center, where the town hall and the church of the Immaculate Conception are located, built with the stone of the Old Tower, from which the name of the city comes. Near the square is the Torrevieja Casino, built in 1896 and in a modernist style, where the façade with a neon-Nazari canopy stands out.
